The Joy of Giving

Generosity encompasses material generosity and generosity of giving in the mind. Traditionally we speak about these as tangible and imagined offerings. We can easily understand tangible offerings: money, food, clothing, cars—anything material. Imagined offerings are intangible and include anything we can imagine without limitation. For example, if we are struck by a beautiful scene in nature, something exquisite and enjoyable, we can make an offering by saying to ourselves, “I multiply this beautiful landscape and offer it to all sentient beings,” and in your mind you imagine that all beings are partaking of the beauty and serenity of the beautiful landscape. Within your mind you manifest, multiply, and give the experience and the terrain to all sentient beings, imagining that they all appreciate and experience what you experience. That is a form of generosity.
