Bodhisattva: Dedicating Life to Helping Others

Practicing generosity is the accessible first step in which you awaken your bodhichitta and embark on the bodhisattva’s path. A bodhisattva is one who dedicates their life to helping others. Generosity is not limited to material giving. It does not only mean giving things and money. It is a far broader topic. Generosity means the act and spirit of giving of oneself to others in any manner called for. It also means giving love, time, help, directions, even simple assistance when called for. If you take the time to teach someone how to read, that’s generosity. If somebody is lost and they need directions and you give them guidance, that’s generosity too. Generosity encompasses all aspects of giving. It is not a magnanimous act of material charity; it is something broader and greater, encompassing a general attitude of abiding in a state of selflessness and service.
