A Doorway to the Openness of Being (1/5)

Oil painting of a woman seen from a distance through a round portal behind large carved, wooden doors in Suzhou, China.

If we ask ourselves honestly if we have appreciated the gift of this life and expressed as fully as possible what we have to offer, many of us will feel that we have fallen short of our potential. The older we get, the more we may focus on missed opportunities or regrets. As we age and adapt to the demands of day-to-day life, we tell ourselves that it is only natural for our creative fire to dim and that the energy to innovate and effect change is for the young and enthusiastic. The truth is, we may fear change at any age and commit much of our energy to being safe and comfortable rather than going beyond our habitual tendencies in order to discover openness. But recognizing the openness of our being is the essential first step of the creative process.
