Still, the desire to be free from suffering is useful now and then. What kind of motivation or aspiration should we hold if not the desire to put an end to the cycle of suffering? The best motivation or aspiration is something called bodhichitta. Bodhi or Buddha means “awakened” and chitta means “the mind” or “the heart.” It is the desire, the intention, to wake up. This term “waking up” is perhaps the most poetic, the most beautiful word in all of the spiritual literature. Perhaps we can create this enlightened intention when we wake up in the morning.
