Lotus Center Receives One of Three 30-Something Grants!

Our community-owned Lotus Center was one of three southwest nonprofit  organizations to receive a $30,000 grant from The 30-Something Fund. The proceeds of the grant will be used to replace our leaky roof and to convert our cooling system from swamp coolers to a centralized air conditioning system. The work will be performed this summer.The 30something grant application requires that the proceeds must be used for something that will attract people who want to either move to Silver City or to visit here. Here is the response that we offered:

Part of what makes our Lotus Center a safe, peaceful, and attractive place to visit is the well-maintained and clean condition of the building, as well as the beauty of its decorations, which we are rigorous in preserving. While a new roof or A/C system will not make people want to move to or visit Silver City, it’s reasonable to say that these improvements are essential to the comfort of the people who come to Lotus Center, whether they are residents or visitors. A clean, well-kept, environmentally-comfortable space for our yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, Qigong, and ecstatic dance classes does attract people to our community. And without adequate protection from the elements, every part of our building – our hardwood floors, drywall, ceilings, flooring, painted murals, and furnishings – are subject to water damage and mold growth and/or damage from continuous low humidity and heat.

A 30-Something grant would help sustain the historic and unique character of Silver City, and Lotus Center is one of the town’s most-recognized buildings. Our aim is to care for Lotus Center properly to ensure its viability – in terms of both its physical plant and our being of service to the community – for many years.

We are humbled to receive the trust and confidence of The 30-Something Fund and its donors, many of whom are Lotus Center patrons. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
