Supreme Court Nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson
(Transcript from Tiktok:
“President Biden nominated the Supreme Court’s first Black woman justice. Here’s why this matters, a lot. This is major because our highest court should reflect the people and the multitude of identities that we hold. Her overall history of decisions in her career is hopeful, and her experience as the first public defender on the court is historic and exciting. Despite her clear qualifications and bipartisan support, we know to brace ourselves for racist attacks. A Black woman Supreme Court justice is a necessity, but representation alone is not enough. Rooted in the “Black Women Best,” framework, we all need a Black woman justice who will fight to undo the structural racism and inequity built into our laws, systems and institutions. By centering progressive Black women in as deciders in our government, we can ensure that our highest court, and our economy, and democracy work for Black women, and therefore all of us. Here’s what you can do: Take note of senators’ questions during hearings. Call out, and denounce racist attacks. Show your Support for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.”)
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is the 6th woman to ever be nominated for the Supreme Court, out of 165 nominations over the course of U.S history. She is also the first black woman to have ever been nominated. To acknowledge her race and gender is to practice intersectional antiracism. Her lived experience will align with a demographic of American people who, to date, have not seen anyone that truly represents them in the U.S Supreme Court.
